Wrestle or Not to Wrestle?
Wrestling is one of the oldest sports in the world, it exists in all cultures. Wrestling is one of the only sports that everyone in the world can understand. There probably aren’t many people in the world who haven’t wrestled around with siblings and friends. The desire to test one’s strength and physical ability is innate — kids everywhere do it for fun!
Wrestling is split into Greco-Roman and Freestyle disciplines:
In Freestyle wrestling the competitors have a much greater freedom. They can use not only their arms and bodies, but also their legs and can take a hold of their opponent anywhere that allows them to overpower and gain total control of them.
In Greco-Roman Wrestling, it is strictly forbidden to grasp the opponent below the belt line, or to trip him or to use the legs actively to perform any action.

Legion Wrestling is a member of the BWA, subsequentially all wrestlers that join must have BWA Membership.
Benefits of Membership:
1. Participation in Local, Regional, and National Competitions
2. Insured against injury home and abroad
3. Able to participate in grading to progress through the award system
All Junior Wrestlers will be put into a class based on their age and ability; classes are limited to 30 students. Kids under 7 will follow the Little Bears/Gorillas curriculum which is designed to develop their core wrestling fundamentals - preparing them for the award system (explained below).
The classes are as follows:
Little Bears: 5 - 6 year olds
Little Gorillas: 6 - 7 year olds
Preparation for White Award: 7 - 16 years old
White Award - Green Award: 7 - 16 years old
LITLLE BEARS/GORILLAS (5-7 YEAR OLDS)
These classes are designed to develop the kids core fundamentals - they are key to developing your child in the following areas:
Isometric and Plyometric Strength
Our Little Bear/Gorillas class will be focused on 80% play vs 20% train. We do not believe in a competitive focus in this age group. We believe at this age kids should be focused on learning wrestling, improving their motor skills, getting stronger and having fun. Little Bears/Gorillas will practice once a week for one hour; practice will include a dynamic warm up, tumbling, isometric strength exercises, wrestling technique and games. Practices will be run at a high pace to keep kids focused and engaged.
WHITE AWARD TO GREEN AWARD (7-16 YEAR OLDS)
This is where we expect young wrestlers to start taking the sport more seriously. There are 3 main focuses:
Acrobatics - which will encourage students to learn body control,
Isometric and Plyometric strength - which students will need to be successful at the higher levels of wrestling
Technical Knowledge - which we emphasise so that kids understand the ins and outs of wrestling at a very young age
Students will be required to learn the syllabus and will be graded (see Grading section) before they can move to the next class.
They will be tested on:
Core Fundamentals - Strength and Agility
Grading takes place twice a year, June and December. In some cases, the Head Coach might make exceptions to grade students earlier dependant on their ability.
